Mosser to PSU-Lehigh Valley
Tom Mosser is best known around the Lehigh Valley as a longtime basketball assistant. Now that label is going to change.
He finally gets a shot at being a head coach after being hired at Penn State-Lehigh Valley.
"I've tried to get a few jobs in the past at the high school level and it hasn't worked out for me, but this time was the right time and the right situation and I'm thrilled to be the head coach at the college level with Penn State ties," Mosser said.
The local Lions play and practice at Cedar Crest College and Lehigh's Stabler Arena.
The 40-year-old Mosser is a 1996 Nazareth graduate and has been coaching at area schools ever since. He coached for four seasons at Bethlehem Catholic with Jim Hutnik and three years with Kevin Lloyd.
He then coached for seven seasons with Joe Stellato at Freedom and spent several seasons with Scott McClary at Muhlenberg College. McClary is now the head coach at Bethlehem Catholic.
"I've done it all, having been around high school as a JV coach and varsity assistant and then college," Mosser said.
One of the nice things about Penn State-Lehigh Valley is that the team features several local products including James Middleton (Easton), Jordan McChristian (Central Catholic), Brandon Purrone (Catasauqua), Maihan Ramin (Nazareth) and several players from Whitehall.
"About 80 percent of the games are against Penn State branch campuses, but we get to travel all over the state," Mosser said. "It's a great experience for the kids and a lot of the coaches who have been at branch campuses have moved up to other college jobs and that would be a goal for me."
